Hiding and running

I have been hiding. I was waiting to hear about a job that I was really excited about and didn’t want to tell people about it in case it didn’t work out. But the only way I could not tell people about it was by not speaking at all, so that is why I was hiding. The job isn’t happening now though, the part of the project I would’ve been working on got cancelled, so I suppose I had better stop hiding as it is not the most healthy of activities.

As well as hiding, I have been running. I am hoping to do a long distance run in a few weeks...

I’m normally pretty coy about where I live, but I think anyone who’s interested has probably worked out by now that I’m among the grounds of Harrow School, where the boyf works. So I might as well just own up to it because it will make explaining the run sitch a lot easier and that is probably the main thing I will be boring you about over the next few weeks.

This is because the run is organised by the school and most of the runners are schoolboys, although some teachers and other people connected with the school join in, like lovely me. It is called the Long Ducker and is from Harrow-on-the-Hill to Marble Arch and back – 20.8 miles. That is a very long way to run. And there is a big hill at the end, which is not really what you want after running nearly 20 miles.

I have been out training with most of the people who are running the course for the last couple of Sundays. I am by far the most rubbish person who is doing it. I know it’s probably not all that helpful for a 30-year-old woman training for her first run to compare herself to a group of 18-year-old sporto boys (and the handful of adults who are all experienced long-distance runners), but when that’s who you’re running with (or rather behind) it’s kind of hard not to.

Being crap has never stopped me from doing anything before though, so I’ll stick with the training and see how it feels in a couple of weeks. There is the option of only doing the second half of the course, but I fear that won’t give me the level of smugness that I crave.

Besides I like very long runs – especially when they are taken by people who I do not like. Ha ha. My wit is almost a quick as my feet.

On one hand, shame about the job, but as the future is impossible to forecast, for all you know it might not have worked out anyway. And there might be something even better just around the corner.

As for the run, good for you. Admirable. I am supremely unsporty (I'm theory, not practice) and have never been on a long run unless you count that treacherous slope leading up from Kings Cross Northern Line station to the Thameslink platform up which I used to run/stagger after work.

If you complete the run, you will be right to feel you have achieved something and I for one will applaud you.

I wonder if the cat museum is still there in Harrow-o-t-H. It was in the basement of an antiques shop and there was a very nice lady who ran it.

I very much hope the cat museum is still here! I doubt it though, The Hill is not very big and I think I would've heard about it. There was a little antiques shop, but it's turned into an art shop now - at least I think that's what it's supposed to be.

Hi Julia

Good luck with the Long Ducker. I once ran the Harrow half marathon and I remember that wretched hill very well!

How is your novel coming along, btw?

Hello Julia, thanks for stopping by! And thanks for the unexpected pic of Jessica Alba at the bottom of the page - ripped or not, she is da schizzle! :)

Hope your Long Ducker training goes well. You realise that all those 18 year olds are dead chuffed you're running with them. You'll be in their dreams for ages! They'll want to impress and start too fast and a few will crack before the end. Of course, they'll be scarred for life when you overtake them!

The following details appear on the Web but I haven't checked them by personal visit lately. Worth a look? (The museum is in the basement.)

My youngest sister is a runner. A few weeks ago she was at a meet where they started the girl team right after the boy team and she managed to beat one of the boys who started a few minutes before her...he was NOT happy and ended up cursing her out. My family had a good laugh at that.

And by the way, I'm sorry about the job not working out. I've been in that situation enough times to know how upsetting it can be...even when you haven't told anyone about it.

Hello, stumbled on your blog via another. Ohhh I know Harrow very well, better than I know long-distance running anyway. I shall look out for runners next time I'm driving by :D

It's a nice buzz that comes from running - I'm currently edging my way up to the admittedly modest 5-mile mark.

Tell me you use Gmaps Pedometer.

(It's nice to be back in here, by the way. Sorry about the commenting absence. x M)

Paul: Ah yes, I've seen the half marathon going past - which way do you run up doing that? Sudbury Hill way? I'm just trying to find it in myself to pick up the novel again, hoping to have a look at it today.

Toby: It's very nice of you to say that, but I'm afraid that when running I'm far from a pretty sight. I suspect my red-faced, sweaty, ruffle-haired image is far more likely to inhabit the poor chaps' nightmares!

JeremyJacobs: Well it's not too late to sign up yourself you know - I can get in you in if you're keen...

SilverTiger: That's the place that's now an art gallery - just a few weeks ago. I went in a few times when it was an antiques shop though and never saw anything about a cat museum. I think it must've been closed for a while, I'd be surprised if I hadn't heard about it. I'd certainly like to know more about what it contained though. Maybe I'll pop in and ask next time I'm passing.

Silverneurotic: Good for your sis! Sadly, I don't think I'll be finding out what that feels like anytime soon.

Jo: Look for a group of boys followed 20 minutes later by a woman whose face is contorted in agony - that will be me.

Mikeachim: Good to hear from you. I've been using the Nike routeplanner, but I'll check out Gmaps one, thanks for the link.

Hello, another stumbler in your midst and one who is of the opinion that you might be a crazy person for wanting to run 20.8 miles!
The only thing that could entice me to run at all is someone coming towards me with a marathon entry form... then i turn into a sprinter to get away from them.

Hi Newbie, thanks for saying hello. I think your assessment of my mental state may be quite accurate!
